Data are available at a resolution of 30 arc-seconds or approximately 1 kilometer for the continental United States, as well as for individual states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

There are two types of data available. Summary File 1 (SF1) data are derived from the Census short form and are based on a full count of the population. Summary File 3 (SF3) data are derived from the Census long form and, in 2000, are based on a sample of approximately one out of every six households.

The state catalog contains data on each state, including population, the number of census blocks, and statistics on the mean and maximum size of census blocks in that state. The City catalog contains a list of the Metropolitan Statistical Areas included in U.S. Census Grids and their populations. The Variables catalog lists the different grids available and describes the census table and fields used for each grid..
